Šmarjetna gora

Šmarjetna gora

Šmarjetna gora is a small hill, with an altitude of 643m, that rises above the city of Kranj on the right bank of the Sava river.

It is interesting to note that the top of Šmarjetna gora previously stood at a height of 654m. However, during construction of the hotel the top of the hill was cut off. Another interesting fact is that Šmarjetna gora has two peaks, the higher and the lower peak. The lower peak, Grmada (592m) got its name from the time of Turkish rule. Another name for the lower peak is also Gradišče, which according to its interesting archaeological remains, indicates it dates from the 8th century BC.

On the southern slopes of Šmarjetna gora, lie preserved narrow terraces on which prehistoric people grew vines. Vines are also present today on Šmarjetna gora including one that is part of Slovenia's oldest known vine, which can be found in Maribor.

The Bellevue Hotel stands at the top of Šmarjetna gora and has a large terrace. The terrace has a unique view of the whole of Kranj and its surroundings. In fine weather you can see up to 20% of Slovenia from the hotel's panoramic terrace.
