Šmarjetna gora

Šmarjetna gora

Šmarjetna gora is small hill that rises above the city of Kranj on the right bank of the river Sava. It has an altitude of 643m.

It is interesting that the top of Šmarjetna gora was in the past 654m high. At the construction of the hotel the top of the hill was cut off. Another interesting fact is that the Šmarjetna gora has two peaks, higher and lower peak. The lower peak has his name from the Turkish times. His name is Grmada (592m). Another name for the lower peak is also Gradišče which is reflecting the interesting archaeological remains that the culture of Gradišče is classified in 8 century BC.

On the southern slopes of the hill are preserved narrow terraces on which prehistoric people grow vines. Vines is also present on the Šmarjetna gora today. Mentioned vine is the part of Slovenia's oldest known vine in Maribor.

On the Šmarjetna gora today stands hotel Bellevue with a large terrace and the church of St. Margaret from the 13th century. The terrace has a unique view of the entire Kranj and its surroundings. In fine weather you can see up to 20% of Slovenia from hotel's panoramic terrace.
